Breaking Carbon Dioxide News From Washington

On June 29, 2010, Republican Senator Olympia Snowe offered her opinion in the climate legislation battle, asserting that electric utilities should pay fees for carbon dioxide emissions.  The Republican Senator from Maine expressed her ideas during a White House meeting in which President Obama gathered more than 20 bipartisan Senators in order to proceed with climate legislation.  Her support comes at a critical time as Democrats gain a Republican supporter in their ongoing battle for climate legislation.  Snowe is urging senators from both parties to consider capping utility emissions, claiming that the Cap-and-Trade program will protect stakeholders from more stringent greenhouse gas limits being outlined by EPA.

News of Senator Snowe’s support comes the same day that President Obama urged the Senate to pass a bill capping greenhouse gas emissions within the year.  During the bipartisan meeting called by the President, he emphasized the need for a price on carbon pollution and is leaving the responsibility of the bill’s details to Democratic leadership.
